  • Building Leadership Skills of Indian Women Social Entrepreneurs

    WHY

Only 25 per cent of social enterprises in India are led by women. Women entrepreneurs are often subject to discrimination from their families, communities, and investors when compared to male peers. This issue is even more acute for women because social entrepreneurship can be stigmatized as being unprofitable.

As a result, women-led social enterprises in India will benefit from the establishment of a formalized, cohesive network that would provide access to information, capital, mentorship, and other opportunities that are currently lacking in both social and commercial enterprises.

    4

    The Way Forward

    • Take ownership of the network and put in place initial frameworks and processes to ensure continuity.

  • THE JOURNEY

The Learning Journey of an IWSEN Founding Member

    • Founding members are going through a combination of activities and events each month, all designed around a particular theme (linked to the objectives mentioned above). Each theme will have a combination of:

    1. A virtual training session for skill acquisition on the theme.
    2. An expert speaker session once a month, related to the theme.
    3. A peer group discussion and reflection activity.

    ● They also receive continuous support from the Amani Institute team with one:one coaching.

    ● A systematic and staggered approach towards network building and identifying a core group of members who can work towards ensuring the continuity of the platform.

    FIVE KEY THEMES

    1. Wellbeing and personal leadership development (July-Aug)

Being an organizational leader, especially during uncertain and challenging times as we have found ourselves in, requires an additional focus on wellbeing. Working remotely and with multiple disruptions that we continue to witness, this module will provide participants with tools and frameworks to understand how best to manage energy and strengthen wellbeing for themselves and their team members. They will build understanding towards key concepts of self-leadership, first to understand themselves better and therefore to lead their organizations better.

    2. Fundraising Essentials (Aug-Sep)
Fundraising will always be a crucial skill for all organizations in the social impact sector. In this module, we will cover this topic from 2 angles. Through a training webinar, we will focus on the basics of pitching for funds using proven frameworks and storytelling skills to help participants refine and craft their pitch in the most compelling way. Through guest speakers and expert talks, we will also provide them with more specific advice about the current state of the fundraising landscape in India and ways in which participants can explore further options for raising funds.

    3. Scaling Strategies (Sep-Oct)

How to scale their enterprise is a major preoccupation for all social entrepreneurs. In this module, they will 1) understand the various approaches that can be used to start to prepare an enterprise for scale, 2) get exposed to the range of scaling options for social sector organizations, and 3) explore what may be the right strategy for participants' ventures, based on their current status and future plans.

    4. Business Models (Oct-Nov)

In this module, participants will understand the Business Model Canvas (BMC) and create/recreate it for their organizations keeping the current reality in mind. They will also go through a live example of an organization that has modified their business model and use examples from within the group to support and peer-consult with each other to identify opportunities for growth for each of their organizations using the BMC.

    5. Leading Teams (Nov-Dec)

Covid-19 has brought up a need for us to equip ourselves with new ways of working with our teams effectively - how do we keep them motivated during challenging times, how do we effectively engage them, what aspects of our leadership will we need to adapt to be able to effectively manage our teams going forward? Participants will explore these and other related topics when they delve into the module of Leading Teams.
